September 3rd, 2012

READY! for Kindergarten
Sponsored by the Claremont School District

  • READY is a research-based, practical program that shares information with parents about preparing children for kindergarten. The classes are fun and relaxed, interactive, and hands-on
  • The primary focus of READY is basic language/literacy, math/reasoning, and social-emotional readiness skills.
  • READY provides tools (toys) and training to parents and other caregivers of children ages birth to 5 years. These high quality toys and other learning materials are given to parents (free of charge) to take home, use and keep.
  • READY classes meet 3 times per year for 90-minutes each class.
  • Parents meet in age level groups with families who have children the same age as theirs: Infant, 1 year old, 2 year old, 3 year old, or 4 year old classes
  • Each class offers powerful ways to talk, read, sing and play with young children based on age-appropriate learning targets. Parents learn to “play with a purpose”, and have fun learning with their children.
  • READY is offered free of charge. The program is funded this year by the Claremont School District, the Claremont Savings Bank, and the Women’s Fund of New Hampshire.
  • Child care is provided.

Creative Parenting… As Simple as a Day at the Beach!

September 28th, 2011

Good Beginnings of the Upper Valley is hosting a lecture called Creative Parenting… As Simple as a Day at the Beach!

The lecture is being held Tuesday, October 18, 2011.
Refreshments at 6:30pm, Lecture starts at 7:00pm.
Auditorium E, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Free and Open to the Public

About the lecture: Anyone who’s ever tried to convince a toddler that a tantrum is a waste of time and energy knows that discipline can be a very touchy subject with the five and under set.  Come to this free lecture to learn creative new ways to guide children toward appropriate behavior, especially in public settings like restaurants, grocery stores, or… the beach!

Ronald Schneebaum, MD, a pediatrician with a background in eduation, will be speaking at the Good Beginnings Fall Lecture this year.  His approach to discipline follows a path that lies between two parenting camps: that which demands respect for authority and that which believes constant nurturing to be the key to guiding children to happy, productive adulthood.

“I thought there needed to be a third way,” he says. “Think about a day at the beach – it takes a lot of planning. Before you go you decide what you want to achieve: be safe and have a good time. You see something that’s not safe, you intervene.” Dr. Schneebaum believes that the same principle can be applied to discipline; you decide on your goals and then when you see something that doesn’t line up with those goals, you step in. “Actually, parents already know everything they need to know about discipline. They just don’t know it!”

Don’t miss this free lecture! Parents, grandparents, caregivers, medical professionals, anyone who works with children: here’s a chance to discover new ways to bring out the best in our children.

Ronald Schneebaum, MD is a pediatrician on the staff of the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Bedford Office.  He also holds a master’s degree in education and worked as a school teacher before becoming a doctor.  Dr. Schneebaum has focused his interest on childhood discipline and is currently working on a book titled “Creative Parenting… As Simple as a Day at the Beach.”
